Mawlana Yunus Daya

Mawlana Yunus Daya is among the stalwart ‘ulama of our country. He was born in 1948 in Alexandra (Johannesburg).

Education

He began studying in 1963 in Waterval Islamic Institute (Mias Farm) and completed Hifzul Qur’an under the guidance of Hafiz ‘Abd al-Rahman Mia. He also completed the basic books like Quduri, etc. under the tutorship of Mufti Ibrahim Sanjalwi, Mawlana Ibrahim Mia, Mufti Bashir Sanjalwi and Mawlana Nazir Sanjalwi.

In 1969 he left for Dabhel where he furthered his studies under the likes of Mufti Ahmad Khanpuri, Mawlana Ibrahim Patni, Mawlana Ibrahim Palanpuri, Mawlana Adam Palanpuri and Mawlana Hamdullah.

He then moved to Dar al-‘Ulum Deoband where he completed his ‘alim course under the illustrious ‘ulama of Deoband. He studied Sahih al-Bukhari under such spiritual and intellectual giants, initially under Mawlana Fakhr al-Din and then finally under Qari Muhammad Tayyib and Mufti Mahmud Hasan Gangohi. He continued his stay in Deoband and learnt other books under various luminaries in the institution.

Some of his services

He returned to South Africa in 1973 where he began to serve his community with great sincerity and steadfastness up to the present day (now in Marlboro Gardens). A remarkable feat indeed!

Mawlana’s guidance is generally sought by all. His concern for the Ummah is tremendous. He is especially concerned at the alarming rate of the various degrees of irtidad (apostasy) which is gripping the Ummah today. He is also engaged in Tabligh Jama’at activities – a cause which he has always held close to his heart.

Mawlana’s spiritual and islahi relationship was initially with Mawlana As’ad Madani and currently he is closely associated with Mawlana Zulfiqar Ahmad Naqshbandi.
